Adventures in Knitting
I amaze myself. I never used to like knitting. Suddenly I'm unraveling old sweaters to make into felted wool purses, buying knitting needles and visiting all the likely stores in Prince George to find out what is available. I would like to knit with wool or maybe cotton, this means my supply of yarn is limited. I'm contemplating making a cardigan. Since my knitting skills are a combination of basic stitches and making it up, most of the patterns I looked at I had to reject. The enormity of the learning curve I would have to take to first interpret them and second do the actual knitting would have been to huge. I found a very easy pattern for a cardigan on the Mango Moon site.
The only problem is finding kid mohair. I had almost decided to make do and just knit it up with wool suitable for the size of needles and stitch gauge recommended in the pattern. I was horrified when I calculated the cost. If I was going to spend so much time and money making make this cardigan I want it to be made out of something I like not something I'm just making do with. On line I found this page of results for my search for, "Canadian knitting supplies". I'm going to be busy for a long time.

There are a few really good (and reliable) places I like to get my knitting goods from...
elann.com - they ship out of BC. Just remember to shop in Canadian dollars! They tend to have some decent sales, but the books are usually pricey.
ramwools.com - they're based in Manitoba. Awesome supplies of yarn, and most of them have a discount if you buy a bag of ten. Good buttons, too.
redbirdknits.com - the place to go for luxury yarn. Robyn specializes in lace and sock yarn, but lots of other stuff, too...and has an amazing selection of Fleece Artist.
beehivewool.com - good source for Patons yarn, which is pretty inexpensive but good quality.
If you want more suggestions, let me know...I had a heck of a time finding good Canadian stores, and I'm happy to compare notes!
Thanks Heather. This is valuable information. I'm looking forward to checking out these places.
Hiya Melanie
We have a great store here, called, The never ending yarn, lots of cotton, wool, alpaca, all kinds of beee-oootiful stuff.
Come for a visit!
Rachel, I would love to visit but I don't know where your store is?
