Skiing in the meadow every morning, writing, talking to trades people and knitting or rather unraveling means I have no time left to read. I received five books for Christmas. Usually by this time, the middle of January, I would have read at least two of them. To date I have only read three short stories in, Tim Winton's latest collection, "The Turning".
This book was recommended to me, based on previous books I've read, by Amazon.com. It's my first encounter with Winton's story telling and I'm enjoying the experience immensely. The writing is vivid and tight, no wasted words or rubbishy sentences to make me wince. In the stories I've read so far the characters are young, jubilant and full of lust for whatever life may throw at them. The action takes place against the vast frontier like Australian landscape. I can almost feel the heat rising off the sand or steaming off the ocean into a sky as wide and unconquered as the universe.
"The Turning" promises to be a fun read and I really should be picking the book back up ASAP... Hmmmnn, now where's my knitting?
When you find your book let me know. Mine might be there too, LOL.
ReplyDeleteActually, I always read before going to sleep, even if it is only a page or a couple of sentences...except at this rate it takes forever to read a whole book :)
