Building with Pine Beetle killed logs

On Saturday we wet out to see how they are progressing on our house. As you can see they have the first few logs on and some spaces cut for doors and windows. They cut the window and door holes smaller then they are to be so they have room to finish them with a nice beveled edge. For more photos check go here remember you a=can click on tehm to see them bigger ofr watch the slide show.

The log house is being made out of Pine. Some of it has been partly beetle killed. This does not affect the quality of the logs. Where the beetles have been the logs have a blue tinge. Which give them more character, not to say that Pine doesn’t already have lots of character. Anyway the house is going to be unique because, here in BC anyway, there soon won’t be any pine left. It seems the beetles have killed off all the bigger trees and are now starting to fly towards the smaller ones.

the start of the log house In the background you can see some unpeeled logs. We ripped off the bark to take a look at the beetle damage to the wood. beetle kill pine You can see the black beetle in the middle and the white larva all around it, the tracks of where the beetles have been burrowing into the wood and the blue tinge where the tree is slowly dying.
