Buy Nothing Today Dilemma

Several years ago when the concept of buy nothing day, BND, first tripped my conscience I didn't really get it. Wouldn't we just buy everything we couldn't buy today tomorrow? Why should we put aside only one day when we don't buy anything? Shouldn't we be cognizant all the time of the excess stuff all of us consume everyday?

I wasn't bought up to indulge in mindless consumerisim. Before I buy anything I spend hours doing research and subject myself a billion searching questions : do I really need it? Is it the right colour, the right fit, the right price? Is it the right thing for the job? How long will it last? I realize I'm abnormal.

When I noticed Kerryanne's post I decided to give it a try. Lately I've been spending money like crazy on my new house. Of course there is the deeper question of - do I really need a new house?

I love the idea of Buy Nothing Day and have observed it for the past three years.

It feels good.

I've been clicking through the NaBloPoMo randomizer today, and I am appalled by how many bloggers got up at some insanely early hour to be the first in line to buy some frivolous gadget.

Keep spreading the message. Clearly, it still hasn't sunk for a lot of folks.
