Sunday morning, on our way back home, we stopped to visit Irene to catch up on the gossip, what’s been going on in Tomslake and Dawson Creek since the last time I saw her, 8 months ago. I also wanted to get some of the rose.
A long time ago I got this rose from a garage sale. In the picture it is planted in my Prince George garden, the first one. I think it is a Scotch rose, Rosa spinosissima L. It is extremely hardy, very spiny and has huge red hips. In my windy garden in the Peace it grew about five feet tall. It suckered moderately and I gave one of these suckers to Irene. Her plant is now about eight feet tall and six feet wide.
Years later, when we moved, I took one of the new suckers from my rose bush and planted it in my garden in Prince George. Here it grew to the towering height of twelve feet and it didn’t sucker. Unable to dig up the whole pant I was forced to leave it behind last year, when we moved into our new house.
On Sunday at Irene house I dug up three suckers and brought them home in the back of the car.
Gardening is always like that, you buy one plant, it grows and grows and before you know it you’ve divided it into three or four pieces and given them too all your gardening friends.
